The large, outdoor area in the Early Years is a wonderful place to allow children's imaginations to soar. Children can go on an adventure to the moon in a spaceship, perform a show to an audience on the stage or balance, jump, run and skip in the outdoor equipment. The space also provides opportunities for the children to bring their learning from inside, outdoors, using junk modelling to make houses when learning about shapes and creating giant rangoli patterns when learning about Diwali.
Daily challenges are set up in the outdoor areas, linked to the learning of the week and the children's interests, and children use the resources around them to create, build, investigate and inquire.

In the Early Years, the Read Write Inc. programme, developed by Ruth Miskin, is used to support children with their reading and writing. The programme uses synthetic phonics, which is the ability to convert a letter into sounds that are then blended together into a word.
In Nursery, children are introduced to a sound a week. They are then given the opportunity to explore this sound within their learning environment, through creative challenges and mark making.
In Reception, children have daily phonics lessons where they learn and apply their new sounds to words. They then have the opportunity to write the words and read them in different contexts. The children are assessed regularly and grouped according to their ability.
In Nursery, children take home a library book each week to share with their families. In Reception, children receive one library book and one reading book weekly, which is appropriate for their reading level. Children are read with throughout the week and asked questions about their books to determine their levels of comprehension.
Classrooms in the EYFS are language rich environments and children are always encouraged to use their sounds to read throughout the day. Topic books and other types of reading materials are available for the children to enjoy in the classroom and the Rainforest Reading Area. These are linked to the topic of learning in the classroom and the children's interests.

There is a clear importance on creating a happy and positive environment in the Early Years, which can be seen at Hermitage Primary School in a number of ways.
Children have daily circle time in both Reception and Nursery, giving them the opportunity to share and be listened to. Discussions are centered on concerns from the day and friendship, kindness and listening skills. PSHE lessons also happen weekly which help children apply their understanding.
The EYFS Kindness Tree is used for children to nominate a friend who has been kind to them in the classroom. This happens throughout the week and helps children feel positive and proud of their achievements.
Alongside this, stories are shared with the children throughout the week at the end of the day that focus on positive well-being and happiness.
Zones of regulation have been introduced to the children as a way to help them cope with their feelings and changes in the day. The children worked together to think of strategies they can use if they are feeling worried, upset or angry.
Daily mindfulness takes place in the classroom to help re-group and ground the children, promoting positive well-being and thinking time through mindful breathing, mark making and yoga.
In EYFS, children are given a good amount of indoor and outdoor time, giving them the opportunity to explore the outside area and garden, helping promote good mental health.
The quiet rooms and reading areas are available for children to use throughout the day if they need a moment of thinking time or reflection. There are also activities available where they can use their hands to promote good fine motor skills.
